A Wet and Narrow Trail

Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Collier County

primitive trail

Prepare to get your feet wet! This is the long trail at Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. It is 1.3 miles long, narrow and natural-surfaced, inundated during the wet season to the point where it can be impassable at times. It can be mucky in places even at the height of the dry season. The trail goes through prairies, hardwood hammocks, like the one above, through swamps and pine flatwoods, emerging back at the parking lot opposite the trailway entrance. We've struck out. No panthers. But it's rare visitor who will see one. Maybe you'll have better luck. BACK TO THE BEGINNING.
