ironweed flowers

Ironweed, vernonia schreb, has a fairly wide range, covering most of the eastern U.S. and Ontario. There are two varieties found in the Sunshine State — giant ironweed and Florida ironweed. The two varieties are fairly similar, with size of the plant being the major difference. Giant ironweed (vernonia gigantea) is found as far south as Martin County and can reach as tall as 8 feet, while Florida ironweed (vernonia blodgetti) ranges between Monroe and Indian River counties and is limited to 1 to 3 feet. Both produce fuzzy blue/violet flowers that attracts butterflies and bees. Given its location in south Palm Beach County (Boca Raton) and its size, we believe this is Florida ironweed.
