This is the restored cypress dome swamp at Kristin Jocobs Natural Area at Hillsboro Pineland. Historically, the swamp was larger than what's here now, but construction of nearby neighborhoods and the dredging of the Hillsboro Canal a century ago changed the hydrology of the area and the hyrdroperiods (how long land would be inundated with water) of surrounding lands. Ironically, this land once fed water into the Hillsboro River; now, Broward County land managers pump water from the nearby Hillsboro Canal to keep water levels in the swamp and surrounding wetlands at historic levels.
