plumbago flowers

Plumbago is so ubiquitous in Florida you'd think it was a native. Actually, it's native of South Africa that escaped cultivation and found its way into the Florida landscape at a few disturbed sites. Plumbago is a vine-like shrub with pale blue flowers that bloom all year long, making it an attractive plant for gardeners. It's also found in Louisiana, Texas, Arizona and California. It's scientific name plumbago auriculata. Other common names are cape plumbago and sky flower. There is a native plumbago (p. scandens) but rarely gets more than a foot tall, is more of a vine and has white flowers. Cassius blue caterpillars feed off its leaves.
