Royal Palm Hammock can be a busy place. Along with the Anhinga and Gumbo Limbo trails, it is the first real stop in Everglades National Park beyond the Edgar Coe Visitors' Center. Hike through the Gumbo Limbo Trail and the crowd mostly disappears. Near the end of the trail, you'll come to this charming spot. Peaceful and a little more open than most of what you've just passed through. Take a moment and enjoy it. See if you can spot a wading bird, perhaps. Just behind this pond is the Old Ingraham Highway, which once connected Homestead and Flamingo. The old road, named after Florida East Coast Railroad executive James E. Ingraham, now serves as a 10-mile long hiking trail. That's 10 miles one way, to be clear. Also note that the trail can be flooded at times.
