Although boat is the preferred method for getting around the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area, there are a few places where you can experience it first hand, as I did along with member of my University of Florida Master Naturalist class a few years back. It was a short but rugged hike, the water above the knees, murky enough to hide hidden obstacles like rocks and logs and the sawgrass explaining first hand why it is called sawgrass. It was slap you and cut you if you're not careful.
