The Crested Caracara

Snake Road, Broward/Hendry Counties

crested caracara
This is the prize, why you make the drive to Snake Road, the crested caracara. The bird is rare enough that it is considered threatened under both the federal and state endangered species acts. There's a lot of open grassland and ranches along Snake Road, dotted by a few cabbage palms. That makes it prime habitat for these birds, like this one we photographed near Big Cypress. Focus on fence lines near the road to spot these birds
