Loggerhead Key At Sunset

Dry Tortugas National Park

PHOTO

At 64 acres, Loggerhead Key is the largest island in the Dry Tortugas chain and lies about three miles west of Garden Key. It's open to the public for day use (no camping) year-round, but getting there requires a vessel of some sort, either your own boat or a kayak. Boaters must file a permit on Garden Key before visiting the island. Kayaks can be transported to Dry Tortugas National Park via the Yankee Freedom ferry. The island gets its name from the abundance of sea turtles that nest here, which were once used to help feed the crews that manned the lighthouse and Fort Jefferson. Photo by David Sedore
