This is the skeletal remains of the north coaling dock built in 1898, where the navy's steam-powered warships would refuel as they patrolled the surrounding seas. The U.S.S. Maine would have stopped here on its fateful trip to Havana where an explosion on board would sink the ship and — pardon the pun — spark the Spanish-American War. It's now a place where various terns, boobies and other seabirds hang out during foraging forays. Bush Key would be to the right..
