Air Force Beach

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, Palm Beach County

Beach
NORTH PALM BEACH — Air Force Beach was the nickname given this stretch of oceanfront within John D. MacArthur Beach State Park 60 or 70 years ago, so-called because of its popularity with the airmen of Morrison Field/Palm Beach Air Force Base (now Palm Beach International Airport). Lake Worth Cove cuts between the beach and the mainland, making this stretch of land about as secluded as any beach in Palm Beach County. There are 1.6 miles of beach within the park, away from city lights and traffic noise, a haven for shore birds such as sanderlings, ruddy turnstones, royal terns, herring gulls, laughing gulls, ring-billed gulls, brown pelicans and more. It's an especially important beach for sea turtles, which, not coincidentaly are the subjects of our next stop. Photographer's note: the beach usually isn't as empty as the photo shows. It was was taken during an evening blustery enough to pick up beach sand and make the area barely tolerable.
