Walk eastward out of the parking lot along Hungryland Slough Natural Area's Loop Trail and you'll notice the land has sort of a scrubby flatwoods look to it, a mix of cabbage palms and slash pines mixed in with some grasses. It's actually hydric flatwoods, wet during the rainy season, not so wet during the dry. Because it's both wet and dry for extended portions of the year, a lot of different plant species will grow here, making it one of Florida's most diverse habitat types. The looks aren't exactly what you might expect given the name of this place, But don't worry, Hungryland gets much, much wetter. Next Photo.
