We continue down the accessible trail at Jupiter Inlet Lightouse Outstanding Natural Area and we come to the third of the three natural habitats, mangrove swamp and the Indian River. There's a covered overlook here with seating, making for the perfect spot to settle in for a few moments. Looking down, you can get some idea how Confederate smugglers once used the maze of mangrove islands to evade Union patrols. Mangroves probably once covered much of the shoreline decades ago, but as modern development progressed, much of it was cut down despite the protection it affords shorelines and shelter for both avian and aquatic species. Creating the natural area provided an opportunity to restore some of what had been lost. NEXT STOP: When You Come to a Fork
