When Martin County and the South Florida Water Management District bought the land to create Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management Area, their goals included restoring the natural mix of slash pine flatwoods, marshes and wet meadows that existed here when Ponce first stepped foot on the Florida peninsula. Making the land accessible to the public was also a priority. The result of their work, in our opinion, is some of the best and most beautiful hiking trails in this part of the state. Note the cattails in the foreground, indicating the presence of a marsh and the restored flatwoods in the distance..
