Exploring the St. Lucie River

Halpatiokee Regional Park, Stuart, Martin County

Exploring the South Fork of the St. Lucie River via canoe or kayak is like exploring two parks at the same time. Halpatiokee Regional Park occupies the west bank of the river, while Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park has the east bank. A low-lying arch bridge over the river near the north end of the park prevents most motorized boats from reaching Halpatiokee, keeping river waters calm. You might catch a glimpse of a river otter, manatee or alligator during your time on the water. Even if you don't, there's always the beauty of the St. Lucie. Halpatiokee also has two borrow pit lakes open to paddlers. Don't have an appropriate vessel? Rentals are available at the Lost River Outdoor Center.
