The Bluegill Trail

Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area

wilderness
Until completion of the main entrance on the Beeline Highway several years ago, the Bluegill Trail at the Karen T. Marcus Sandhill Access Park was probably the easiest point to enter the Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area. It's one of two multi-use access trails that lead into Loxahatchee Slough, the other being the Pantano Trail in Riverbend County Park. You can bike, hike or ride (on horseback) your way into the slough. There are dedicated equestrian trails within the slough; bicycles are limited to the multiuse trails. The park is situated about a mile east of the Beeline on PGA Boulevard. The Bluegill essentially is a berm along the C-18 canal. Loxahatchee Slough's kayak launch is across the C-18 canal from the park. There is plenty of parking, restrooms and drinking water. Karen Marcus was a long-time member of the Palm Beach County Commission and a strong environmental advocate. The construction of the C-18 opened the surrounding land to development but altered the landscape of the slough forever.
